The general concept for Smalk is one that Pete, the founder of Smalkworks, has had for many years. While general small talk was never an issue for him, he thought it would be fun to have a list of questions that could serve as conversation starters on topics that typically aren't discussed, even amongst friends and family.
But with no coding skills of his own, Pete needed to find someone who could help him build it.
So after doing some initial research on Code Canyon, he found an app that while originally designed for a completely different use case, had almost the exact setup and card swiping interactions he wanted for his own app.
Code Canyon allows you to contact the developers of the app for sale directly via its platform, so Pete reached out to the developer who was available to work on the project. All that was required to get started was a basic specification doc with the requested changes to the original app.
After the Product Requirements Doc (PRD) was shared with the developer, it only took 1 month to get to a working prototype, this included the creation of an Admin Panel where it would be easier to add future questions and control various design elements of the app.
One month after launching the app, Apple reached out to feature the app on its social channels, which helped the app reach a high chart position and earn back the initial development costs.
"This is a fun way to get to know someone better, even if you’ve known them for years! Awesome for date nights and road trips."
